The California Academy of Sciences has set a project to issue a catalogue of highly detailed digital images of around 12,000 ant species known to science.

"They're amazing insects as they invented farming way before human did,” said senior project researcher Dr. Brian Fisher.

The Antweb catalogue has already included detailed images more than 5,000 species consisting of the trap-jaw ant from the tropical forests of Central and South America, provided by Dr. Fisher and his team.

To produce magnified images, the team uses a particular software named Auto-Montage 3D, developed by the UK-based Scientific Digital Imaging. It can take and combine 30 different shots, each along a different plane of focus.

This online ant catalogue will serve as a resource for researchers studying the insect.

“It will be easier for to work out if what they have found is a new species if they have access to details of every known species," Dr. Fisher explained.

Only about 15 percent of all the species have been found on Earth and people seem more interested in finding life on Mars than the other 85 percent, Dr Fisher noted.
