Beijing Live: Lamborghini Urus SUV concept

At the Beijing International auto show, Lamborghini finally revealed what its SUV will look like – this is the new Lamborghini Urus SUV Concept. It’s Lamborghini’s second-ever off-roader – after the 1986 LM002.

The company describes Urus, also known as Aurochs, as the ancestor of domestic cattle whose appearance is still evident in modern Spanish fighting bulls.

It’s a breathtaking design. The body lines comprise a combination of Coke-bottle curves and Lambo-esque angles. It’s unmistakably Lamborghini, looking incredibly strong in a refined way.

The 600-horsepower all-wheel-drive vehicle it’s a big SUV, stretching to 4990mm long, but at 1660mm tall it’s closer to coupe-kind than mud-pluggers. The Italian automaker targets 600 horsepower for the output, but does not specify the engine configuration - but considering the automaker claims that the Urus will boast the lowest CO2 emissions of any vehicle in its class, we suspect that some manner of turbocharging will be applied to Lambo’s V10.

Whatever engine powers the production version, Lamborghini is targeting a 0-60mph time of around four seconds. Power is likely to be channelled through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Torsen torque-sensing four-wheel drive system with an electronically operated torque vectoring system capable of juggling the amount of drive going to each rear wheel.

Current press information released on the Urus is deliberately vague as the launch is not set until 2015, so there is still time to decide the powertrain.

The Italian brand sold only 1602 cars in 2011, yet Winkelmann estimates that a production version of the Urus could earn Lamborghini an extra 3000 to 3500 sales a year.

Pricing would likely start at about $100,000, which is roughly the same as a Cayenne Turbo, and go up to around $200,000.
