Audi Q1 baby SUV revealed

According to Khabar Khodro, Audi is lining up a small SUV to join the Q3, Q5 and Q7 called the Audi Q1, which is aimed at stealing sales from Nissan Juke buyers who want something more upmarket. It will be available in early 2016.

In addition, the Q1 will be joined by the sporty Q2, based on the Crosslane Coupé revealed at last year’s Paris show.

The new baby crossover will make use of the VW Group’s versatile MQB architecture. It will use the smallest version of this platform, which it will share with the all-new VW Polo and next Audi A1.

The Q1 is likely to be just four metres long, around 1,750mm wide and 1,570mm high. That makes it a little taller than the A1, but slightly smaller than the Juke.

The new model will share downsized, stop-start-equipped engines with the next A1. These are likely to include a version of the three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbo engine used in the VW up! as the entry-level engine. There will also be a 1.2-litre petrol four-cylinder, and the newly developed 1.4-litre TFSI petrol that features in the A3 e-tron.

At the top of the range, a 200bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol will be fitted to the SQ1, which will rival the Juke Nismo.

Diesel options are likely to include a new 1.4-litre TDI, plus a higher-powered 1.6 TDI. A six-speed manual will be standard, and VW’s new 10-speed DSG is expected to be the automatic option.

Expect the entry-level Q1 SE petrol to start at around £16,000.
