Bugatti Chiron Will Try to Hit 288 MPH

According to Khabar Khodro, the Bugatti Chiron is looking to beat the Veyron’s 268-mph speed record.

It’s not really a surprise that Bugatti wants its new Chiron to make a world speed record attempt, but it’s believed the Chiron is capable of going 288 mph once the speed limiter is removed according to company projections.

Compared to the Veyron Super Sport, which currently holds the speed record, the Chiron packs quite a bit more power with 1,500 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque.

Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer confirmed to Autocar that the French automaker will make an attempt. “I know the Chiron will be faster, but we don’t know how fast. We have the calculations from our simulations, but it is always different to sit in the car and actually do it.”

For the production model, Bugatti will limit the Chiron’s top speed at 261 mph, which isn’t even faster than the Veyron Super Sport’s current record. But the Veyron Super Sport’s official top speed is 257 mph, so there’s good reason to believe the Chiron has a bit left in the tank.
