2010-'11 Volvo XC90 Recalled for Steering Problem

Volvo is recalling 350 2010-'11 XC90s because the power-steering fluid may leak, leading to a sudden loss of power steering, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As KHABAR KHODRO reports ,"The power-steering fluid may leak from the oil pipe connection at the steering gear valve housing," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This condition could lead to a sudden loss of power steering, increasing the risk of a crash."

In other documentation filed with the federal government, Volvo said that the defect may result in slow leakage, generating noise and gradually decreased power steering assistance. It said the "root cause" of the problem is that "the supplier (ZF) has identified an assembly process issue (including influence of the operator) and a pipe geometry that is out of specification."

Volvo said it is still investigating the chronology of events and will submit a more detailed report to the federal government later.

Volvo dealers will replace the oil pipes on the power steering rack on the affected vehicles. The recall is expected to begin on May 31.
