Scientists say they have found a planet outside the Solar System that meets the essential requirements for harboring Earth-like life.

Scientists believe there is rainfall and probably watery oceans on Gliese 581d. Classified as a 'super-Earth,' the planet has a mass 5.6 times that of Earth.

The research reveals that this extrasolar planet orbits a red-dwarf star, which is one of the closest stars to the Sun in the galaxy.

The light Gliese 581d receives from its star has approximately 30 percent of the intensity of sunlight on Earth, but amazingly the atmosphere's high production of greenhouse gases modifies the temperature and heats the planet.

According to the scientists, while the planet could theoretically harbor life it would not be comfortable for humans as its gravity is twice that of Earth and the atmosphere is dense with carbon dioxide.

Previous research had deemed the planet uninhabitable; however, new research has raised hopes of finding exoplanet that could support Earth-like life.
