Hyundai looking to take on Lexus, BMW with new CUV and sports sedan

Although Hyundai’s most recent vehicle launches have targeted the lower end of the automotive spectrum – with cars like the Elantra and Accent – the Korean automaker is preparing at least two new models to take on the more established luxury brands.

According to KHABAR KHODRO, The Hyundai Veracruz was originally intended to take on the Lexus RX, but crossover failed to appeal to luxury buyers. The Veracruz launched before some of Hyundai’s more serious luxury offerings hit the street – like the Genesis sedan and Equus – which could have dinged the CUV’s luxury image.

However, Hyundai will look boost the Veracruz’ stock – both in terms of luxury and sales – with the next-generation of the crossover. The Veracruz will actually disappear for the 2013 model year, but will return as an all-new vehicle in early 2013 as a 2014 model. Look for the 2014 Veracruz to better rival the Lexus RX.

Following the debut of the next Veracruz Hyundai will reportedly launch a new sports sedan aimed at taking on the BMW 3-Series. The new sports sedan will ride on a version of the Genesis’ rear-wheel drive platform, with styling along the lines of the Genesis coupe. All-wheel drive could be offered.

It remains unknown which engines might power the 3-Series rival, but four- and six-cylinder options seem most likely. A performance variant could also arrive with one of Hyundai’s Tau V8s. However, the sports sedan isn’t expected to arrive on Hyundai lots until at least 2013
