According to Khabarkhodro,The Italian based automaker Fiat is planning to develop a new crossover based on the 500, which will be named the 500X.

According to the guys at Automotive News Europe, the future crossover in Fiat’s lineup will replace the current Sedici in the automaker’s European lineup and the model will actually become the fifth variant in the 500 range, along with the 500 three-door hatchback, the 500C convertible, the four-door 500L, and the Abarth performance version. The future Fiat 500X will be the longest model in the 500 range, with 165 inches, and it will have something in common with the 500L, which is using a widened version of the Fiat small vehicle architecture.

Our source is also saying that the car manufacturer will start manufacturing the Fiat 500X in December 2013 and this will be part of the 1 billion euros expansion of the Mirafiori plant, which will eventually make 280,000 small crossovers annually. The Fiat 500X will share the same facility with the new Jeep small SUV, which is codenamed the B-SUV, being expected to go into production in mid-2014. The 500X will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive variants and just like the small Jeep crossover, this will come with a Trail Rated version for the United States auto market.
