Daimler to build Smart eScooter from 2014

German carmaker Daimler confirmed on Thursday that it will build the Smart eScooter, with a target launch date in 2014.

Revealed as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the escooter brings a new futuristic style to the two-wheeled world, while embracing the growing EV movement.

The original concept had the equivalent to 5.4 hp, which allowed a maximum speed of 28 mph. Company also confirmed that the project will undergo new developments and adjustments before it reaches the market in 2014.

“The decision in favor of the escooter has been made,” said Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars, on the sidelines of the international dealer meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

“With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future”.

The two-wheeled Smart eScooter packs a 4kW punch through its rear-wheel-mounted direct hub drive motor and 48-volt lithium-ion battery. It has a range of 100km and a top speed of 45km/h, both more than adequate for urban travels.

It will be the brand’s third EV, coming after this summer’s launch of the ForTwo electric drive car and the Smart Ebike.
