Opel/Vauxhall to launch three new engines

Vauxhall/Opel today announced plans to renew their engine range within the next year with three completely new engines.

While two of them still remain a mystery, the company has divulged some details on its all-new 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine. The four-cylinder engine will be available in various outputs of up to 197bhp – up 20bhp on the current 1.6T – with maximum torque of 221lb ft. from 1700rpm.

The automaker says it will be quieter than the engines it replaces and will be available across a number of model ranges.

“In just twelve months we are launching three completely new engine generations. This shows how fast we are introducing new products,” commented Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke.

“Our new 1.6 liter direct injection engine is a real giant in terms of torque. Power builds up very smoothly and quietly,” explained Opel director of gasoline engines, Thomas Johnen.

As for the other new engines that Opel’s planning, our guess is that most of them will be downsized turbo units below 1600cc in capacity and perhaps even including a three-cylinder unit.
