The Japanese automaker’s recall affects vehicles made for the 2001 to 2006 and 2008 model years that were equipped with the 3-liter, V6 engine and speed control.
Mazda’s recall affects more model years than the Ford Escape (2001-04) because Mazda used the same engine cover design longer than Ford did, The New York Times reported.
The cruise-control cable can get snagged on the engine cover and cause the accelerator to stick if the driver has pushed the gas pedal close to the floor.
Dealers will install fasteners to create more space between the cables and the cover. Parts are expected to arrive in mid-August.
Owners will be notified by mail, and the company said they should take their SUVs to a Mazda dealer immediately to fix the problem.
