GM imports more Sparks from South Korea to the U.S. to keep up with demand

According to khabarkhodro، General Motors has announced it is increasing imports of Chevrolet Spark minicars in the United States following strong demand.

GM recently increased its order for Sparks from the South Korea plant that builds the car, according to Cristi Landy, marketing director for Chevrolet small cars.

We’ve asked for more already. We’ve gotten a really strong reaction in the marketplace,” Landy was quoted as saying by Automotive News. The GM official didn’t say however how many Sparks were imported originally or how many more the carmaker has requested. General Motors launched the Spark in July in the U.S., in 18 metro areas. During its first two months on the market, sales reached 6,313 units, a surprisingly good start for GM executives and dealers alike.

For 2013, IHS Automotive forecast sales of 27,000 Sparks in 2013, the car’s first full year on the U.S. market. However, given the sales pace from the first two months, the Spark could exceed that total. Chevrolet Spark deliveries in the U.S. were affected this summer by a labor strike in South Korea. Landy admitted GM lost some production because of the strikes and added the carmaker is working to make up those lost units by boosting shipments beyond its original forecast.

GM’s South Korea plant can build around 200,000 Sparks a year for sale in Korea, U.S., India, Mexico and other markets.
