BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid spied during winter testing

According to Khabar Khodro, BMW is busy readying the next generation 7 Series for the world and at the same time, the company is also working on the all-new 5-Series. The latter has recently been spotted undergoing cold weather testing. The mid-size luxury sedan is expected to go on sale next year.

Like the new 7 Series, the new 5 Series is also based on BMW’s "35up" platform meaning it, too, will enjoy significant weight saving over the current model. The plug-in hybrid version seen here could make use of a 4-cylinder, 2-litre diesel engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Total power output for this set up is said to be rated at 245bhp and 400Nm of torque.

Other versions of the next generation 5 Series will be offered with a range of four cylinder, straight six and V8 engines. The M5, as expected, will sit at the top of the 5 Series range as the flagship performance model.
